Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS C/2023 A3, Part II
October 13 – 15, 2024
Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS C/2023 A3 finally made its way around to the other side of the sun and put on a spectacular show. Many people have posted beautiful images of the comet. Mine are considerably humbler.
All of these were taken from my yard with the Canon EOS Rebel T3 DSLR on a tripod. Light pollution was a major obstacle–it didn’t occur to me until much later that I should have used the clip-in light pollution filter.
Globular cluster Messier 5 is visible in the images below. The Charles Messier was a comet hunter in the late-18th and early-19th Century who compiled a catalog of objects that looked like comets but were not comets. Imagine how an alignment like this would have caused excitement amount astronomers in his day.
