Reprocessed Images II
If you’ve followed this blog and its predecessor for long, you’ll know that I like to go back and reprocess images when I have access to new tools or learn new skills. Siril, a free astroimage processing tool that I use frequently, has been growing rapidly in recent months. The developers and a handful of users have contributed excellent new features and scripts to the program. Some of the new features, including VeraLux HyperMetric Stretch and SyQon Prism (a denoising tool), add powerful capabilities for bringing out the signal data from the raw images. After a few experiments, I decided it was worthwhile to revisit some past images and reprocess them with the new tools.
The original posts have been updated with the new images. But don’t worry! Links to the old images are provided in case you are curious and want to do a side-by-side comparison. If you do compare the images, you’ll notice that in many cases the revised versions are much larger. This is because the new tools are better at removing noise caused by flaws in the imaging hardware–I often reduce images to hide such flaws. Larger images are reduced to 2,500 pixels across, though, as that seems to be a reasonable maximum for WordPress. As always, your viewing experience will vary depending on the device you are using and its specific display settings.
Here are links to the updated images in original posting order:
- North America and Pelican Nebula
- Messier 8 – The Lagoon Nebula
- Messier 17 – The Omega Nebula
- Messier 16 – The Eagle Nebula
- NGC 6914
- Caldwell 19 – The Cocoon Nebula
- Caldwell 11 – The Bubble Nebula
- Caldwell 27 – Crescent Nebula Redo!
- IC 1396 – The Elephant’s Trunk Nebula
- Heart and Soul
- Iris Nebula
- Omicron Persei Nebula
- IC 405 – The Flaming Star Nebula
- Orion Nebula
I do plan on reimaging some of last year’s targets using the skills I’ve learned since I started using the Dwarf 3. Hopefully I will continue to improve the quality of my images.
